Tarian Healthcare Service Application

This mobile application development project was initiated to address a significant gap in healthcare services in Wales. Unlike in England, where patients can order repeat prescriptions online, users in Wales do not have access to a similar service. The project focuses on creating a prototype application to demonstrate the feasibility of providing such services via a mobile platform.

The primary audience for this app includes NHS Wales users who require repeat prescriptions or wish to book appointments with their GP. The key objective was to develop a prototype that links to the NHS data spine using dummy data, offering patients a more comprehensive range of healthcare services through an accessible mobile app.

Tarian Healthcare Service Application Created by VOiD Applications

VOiD Applications collaborated with the Tarian Group to develop a mobile app prototype aimed at closing the healthcare services gap in Wales, where users currently cannot order repeat prescriptions or book GP appointments through a digital platform. The app was built using React Native for cross-platform compatibility and integrates with the NHS infrastructure using dummy data to provide essential services such as viewing medical history, ordering prescriptions, and booking appointments. The prototype demonstrates the feasibility of a user-friendly and secure platform that can streamline these processes for patients.

The project stands out as a potential solution to long-standing challenges faced by GP practices in managing prescriptions and appointments. Tarian Group’s Director, Graham Wakerley, praised VOiD Applications for their collaboration and delivery of a product tailored to the needs of GPs, effectively reducing the need for multiple systems. With continued support from VOiD Applications, the app is undergoing testing, with plans for future development and integration, while a complementary web application has also been built for the back-end staff within the Tarian ecosystem.

Client Information

The Tarian Group is a healthcare and health technology company that operates four GP practices in South Wales. With a strong focus on improving healthcare services through technology, Tarian Group specializes in developing and implementing innovative solutions that streamline practice management and improve patient outcomes.

Tarian Group partnered with VOiD Applications due to the successful completion of previous projects to a high standard. The collaboration on this mobile app project was a natural progression, driven by a shared goal of improving healthcare services in Wales.

VOiD's Solution

VOiD Applications followed its proven six-step process, beginning with a thorough discovery phase. Given that the client had prior experience with development projects, the discovery process was highly detailed to ensure all requirements were clearly understood. Every screen of the mobile app was designed from scratch, focusing on user experience and functionality. Development was carried out in close collaboration with the client, who provided the necessary data for the project.

The app prototype offers a range of features aimed at improving the healthcare experience for NHS Wales users. These include the ability to view past medical history and test results, as well as old and repeat prescriptions. Users can reorder prescriptions, with the order sent directly to the GP surgery or pharmacy associated with their account, where it prints off in the office for processing. Additionally, the app allows users to search for local pharmacies and receive notifications or letters for important updates such as test results, booking confirmations, and referral notices.

What makes this project unique is its ability to demonstrate that such services can be provided digitally, filling a service gap in Wales. The custom-designed app links to dummy NHS data, and if the project were to go live, all of its features would become integral to users’ daily healthcare management.

Technical Specification

The mobile application was developed using React Native, a cross-platform technology, enabling it to function on both Android and iOS devices. The backend APIs and data management were handled with Django and MongoDB, providing a robust, scalable infrastructure.

Security was a primary focus, with the app being designed to meet NHS supply chain procedures in the future, should it move to a live environment. The architecture is scalable, allowing for additional services to be integrated as needed. Built using open-source, industry-standard technologies, the app ensures flexibility and maintainability for long-term use.

Though the current version of the app is a prototype and does not include third-party integrations, future iterations are planned to incorporate these. Notably, the app includes advanced login features, utilising Face ID and fingerprint authentication to enhance user security and convenience.

Conclusion

The development of this mobile app prototype has demonstrated that the existing services gap in Wales can be effectively closed by providing a user-friendly and convenient digital platform. The app proves that it is possible to integrate with the NHS infrastructure and deliver essential services like prescription management and appointment booking through a modern mobile application.

VOiD Applications continues to support the project while it undergoes testing, with an eye toward securing future funding for full development. The goal is to evolve the prototype into a fully-featured live application. VOiD Applications is also responsible for hosting the app and has developed a complementary web application for backend staff, which functions within the broader Tarian ecosystem, providing additional support to the healthcare system.

I’ve worked with VOiD on a number of projects over the past 7 years, they have always been very professional when we have collaborated together. Having worked in the industry for many years and with many software developers and software development teams both here in the UK and internationally, I hold their concept design skills and prototyping work in high regard and their ability to deliver a product to time, specification and cost is as good as any team I’ve worked with. The team at VOiD do the basics well and work with the customer and their ideas, to get it right at the beginning which is critical.
